Choose the right colours and tile textures

Garden tiles are available in a variety of sizes, colours and materials. With the current range of ornamental paving, you can use help in choosing the right tile. The colour of the garden tiles largely determines the atmosphere in your garden. This creates the basis. How do you make an informed choice for a colour? MBI advises you in choosing your ideal garden tile. The next step is to choose the right material.

The style of your garden determines the choice for tile colour

Before you buy garden tiles, it is important to determine the style of your garden. The colour of the tile plays a major role in this.

  • Neutral paving for a modern garden. Neutral garden tiles are the most popular. These are shades from light grey to black. You will not get bored with this quickly and this is a safe choice for the long term. Our range offers a choice of various garden tiles in different shades of grey. Grey comes in many variants, each with its own look, so many variations are possible here. Note that if you choose anthracite/black: on this colour you can quickly see contamination (shoe prints, cat paws, etc.). That is inherent to black. If you visit a show garden, the terraces are of course well maintained. In practice, this will not always be the case at home; after all, you have more to do than clean the terrace. Be aware of this.
  • Warm tones such as brown, red and yellow give a warm and romantic feeling to the garden. It is important to pay attention to the colour of your home, so that it matches nicely. In general, you will have to keep your patio design slightly more neutral. This way you can keep a little bit of summer in your garden even in autumn and winter. When it rains, the colours often become even more intense.
  • Beige and cream colours for a Mediterranean garden. After grey, this is the most neutral base. Note the fact that light colours reflect more sun. This could blind you in some extreme cases. The location of your terrace is therefore important. Dirt deposits are more visible on lighter colours than on greyish colours. You will have to clean the terrace more often with lighter colours.
  • Dark or light colour? In a dark garden, do not choose the darkest colour of tiles, because then you run the risk that your garden will look gloomy. Your garden on the sunny side? Then a dark colour garden tile will do just fine.

With the trend or timeless?

There is an enormous choice in colour and designs. The possibilities are endless, especially due to the advent of ceramic garden tiles, including GeoCeramica®. As a result, the garden experience has also taken off enormously. When choosing the colour you have to ask yourself whether it is a fun trend or whether it will remain timeless over a long period? After all, with a high-quality garden tile you will enjoy your terrace for many years.

Choosing tile material

Concrete or ceramic tile?

You can choose roughly from two materials. Concrete or ceramics. There are two major differences. Firstly, that is the surface texture. Despite the fact that concrete is a rock-hard material, the surface texture is always more porous than that of ceramics. As a result, dirt has a chance to penetrate and algae can adhere better. With ceramics you will have absolutely no problems with that. Ceramic surfaces are much harder, and therefore more scratch resistant, than concrete. There is a cost in return for this. Ceramic tiles are generally more expensive than concrete tiles. There is also more to it when it comes to installing the tiles. We recommend that you obtain proper information from the specialist dealer or your gardener.

Colours within MBI’s garden tile range

The top layer of our GeoSteen® garden tiles is basically made of natural materials. Often it concerns a mix of different rocks to get a beautiful and nuanced colour. Each mix has its own colour name. We sometimes use the same mix ingredients for different series. However, the surface finishing of the tile largely determines how the colour is perceived. A smooth top layer looks different from a structured (washed) top layer. In that case, we will also give the tile a different colour name to avoid confusion. After all, if these garden tiles are used together, there will always be a visual colour difference.
