Cleaning your patio
Cleaning and maintaining your patio
Cleaning your patio
It's springtime, and we want to get outside and enjoy the garden. But the cold and wet weather has left our outdoor furniture covered in green deposits. And, of course, the patio too. It's a problem everyone faces, but how can you get rid of it quickly?
What's the best way to clean my patio?
It sounds very simple, but the best way to clean your patio is with water. If you have really specific, stubborn stains, we recommend the products from the Lithofin range for your decorative paving. Read all about cleaning your patio on this page.
Cleaning products
On this page, we discuss the use of various cleaning products and what you should and should not use.
- Green soap
- Steam cleaner
- High-pressure cleaner
- Soda
- Biotex
Can I prevent green deposits on my patio? I bought the most expensive tiles available!
Unfortunately, everything outside turns green, regardless of the material. Just look at your rubbish bin, woodwork or glassware. The conditions that cause algae are moisture and cold. You probably also know that the rubbish bin is easier to clean than other coarser surface structures. The same applies to your patio. The type of surface determines how easy it is to clean your patio.
A patio that is always wet and damp will suffer from a lot of green deposits. A patio where a lot of sunlight falls on the paving can dry more quickly and the deposits will disappear quickly. The choice you make when constructing your patio starts with this question. Is my patio in the sun or always in the shade? Patio tiles have different types of top layers, which vary in terms of ease of maintenance. Some tiles are easier to clean than others. Your decorative paving specialist can give you the right advice on this.
Cleaning products and equipment
Can I clean my patio with green soap?
For normal green deposits, we recommend cleaning with clean, hot water. Nothing else. Synthetic cleaning agents can damage your paving and are therefore not recommended. We also advise against using green soap in principle. This is because the basis of this soap consists of oil and fats. And this can leave nasty stains on your concrete paving (if you use too much). Algae dies at higher temperatures. Do you have very bad algae growth? Then try to get the water temperature above 65 degrees. That is the best natural cleaning agent there is.
Which cleaning product works best against algae and moss?
You can find good cleaning products at your paving specialist; it is best not to experiment with household remedies. Also, choose an organic product so as not to damage the other plants in your garden and our environment. Most organic products must be applied to dry surfaces and contain natural enzymes/substances that do the job (dry weather is a requirement). After a short time, most of the green deposits will have disappeared and you can remove the rest with clean water. These products are also available from your paving specialist, including our choice Lithofin, for specific, stubborn stains.
Can I clean my patio with a pressure washer?
We do not recommend using standard pressure washers on our concrete products. This is because the strong water jet from a standard pressure washer can wash away the cement particles between the colour minerals. Cement basically acts as an adhesive, and the colour minerals can come loose. In addition, you make the top layer porous, which means that algae has even more space to settle, and the problem gets worse and worse at a faster rate.
If you still want to clean with a high-pressure cleaner, pay attention to the specifications: the nominal pressure must not exceed 140 bar and the minimum distance between the outlet of the lance and the tile must be at least 20 centimetres! Tiles can be cleaned more safely with a power scrubber.
Ceramic garden tiles and GeoCeramica® can be cleaned with high pressure. These top layers are much harder. But always be careful with the joints.
Can I clean with vinegar, soda or Biotex?
Cleaning vinegar
It is true that weeds do not like cleaning vinegar, and algae do not like it very much either. So it seems like an ideal household remedy for quickly cleaning the patio. However, vinegar is just as aggressive as a chemical agent and, in large quantities, is also not good for the rest of the garden (this applies to both normal cleaning vinegar and natural vinegar). Read more in our special blog about vinegar.
Soda
Soda is a chemical cleaning agent. Chemical agents and nature do not go together. In addition, soda is not very effective on green deposits. As far as we are concerned, don't use it.
Biotex
Biotex is often mentioned as a home remedy. The advantage of Biotex is that it is said to be less harmful to the environment (we do not have any data on this). However, it is much less effective and, for good results, it needs to be left to work for a whole day (apply diluted). Incidentally, we have never tested Biotex and it is unknown whether frequent use can damage the top layer of a concrete tile.
Steam cleaner, ideal for cleaning your patio
Algae and moss
Many people are annoyed by algae or moss that settle on tiles in damp places, especially during the winter months. However, these are generally quite easy to remove. With environmentally friendly cleaning products, this job can be done quickly. Lithofin Terrace Cleaner removes algae (green deposits) on its own. Lithofin products are available from your MBI dealer.
An alternative to cleaning agents is steam. This kills algae and moss. You can then easily sweep up the remains.
Lichens
A more stubborn form of contamination is lichens. These consist of combinations of algae and fungi. They come in various shapes and colours. Sometimes they look like crusts, but in other cases they are leaf-, shrub- or cup-shaped. The best way to combat them is to use steam to raise the temperature of the lichen to 70 degrees Celsius. Do this in dry weather and when the outside temperature is at least 15 degrees. This will kill the roots.
Stains on your patio
Lime efflorescence
Lime efflorescence is another phenomenon that occurs on cement-bound materials (concrete). Under certain climatic conditions, white efflorescence occurs. This is because cement reacts chemically with water, forming free lime that deposits on the surface. This has no negative impact on the quality of the tiles or stones. Moreover, the white efflorescence disappears again over time. Despite all quality controls, this phenomenon cannot be prevented. Ensure good ventilation of the tiles if you place flower boxes etc. on them to avoid marks.
Lime (stains) in decorative paving
Lime (or lime stains) in decorative paving is not necessarily a cause for complaint. Concrete paving is made from cement, sand, gravel and water. Under certain climatic conditions, lime efflorescence can occur on the surface of concrete products. This phenomenon is characteristic of cement-bound materials and is almost impossible to prevent. The cement can react chemically with water that may be present in the tile or in the substrate of the paving, forming free lime that deposits on the surface. This does not affect the quality of the product in any way and, under the influence of the same climatic conditions and through daily use of the paving, this efflorescence will greatly diminish over time and eventually disappear completely.
Of course, it is also possible to accelerate this process. This can be done with household products such as carbonated spring water and cleaning vinegar (always use acidic products sparingly to prevent damage!) or by using Lithofin MN Cement Residue Remover. Lithofin products are available from your MBI dealer.
Primordial stains (rust)
Primordial stains in tiles are caused by pieces of primordial matter that bloom when exposed to oxygen and rain for a long period of time. Concrete consists largely of natural products. Sand and gravel are extracted from sand and gravel pits. Because there is sometimes more in the ground, the sand and gravel may contain iron. These iron particles are not visible to the naked eye.
The particles are not visible during the production, packaging or processing of concrete products. Despite strict quality standards and controls, it is possible for these particles to be present in the raw materials in the concrete mixtures and thus in the end product.
If these particles end up in a tile and are exposed to oxygen and rain for a long period of time, the iron can oxidise. This causes a brown stain. This stain does not affect the quality of the products, but can be aesthetically unpleasant. Unfortunately, this type of contamination is inherent in the raw materials used in concrete products.
Preventing lime efflorescence or primitive stains
If you want to prevent white lime stains or brown primitive stains in your paving, choose ceramic garden tiles. Would you still prefer concrete tiles? Then choose tiles with a compacted top layer/coating. This will reduce the risk of lime or primitive stains.
Due to natural phenomena, lime efflorescence and primitive stains are not grounds for complaint.
Brown leaf stains on your patio
At first glance, leaves on your paving stones look quite harmless. Unfortunately, those stray leaves or even those carefully raked piles of leaves can cause you a lot of annoyance. After lying on your paving stones for a while, they can leave irregular brown spots. Annoyingly, these stains are difficult to remove.
Always remove leaves as quickly as possible!
Regular maintenance is the key to a beautiful patio. By regularly sweeping leaves from your patio, you prevent the acids from the leaves from seeping into your tiles.
Cleaning
Existing stains will slowly disappear due to various weather influences. Sunlight often has a positive effect on stains. If you want to clean your patio quickly and thoroughly, you can use Lithofin Active Cleaner. This product removes stains from plants, leaves, mould and moisture.
