Cleaning ceramic tiles
Cleaning and maintaining your patio
Cleaning and maintaining ceramic tiles is easy, but does require some attention. When the sun starts shining in spring, we all want to get out into the garden. Unfortunately, the cold and wet winter weather often causes green deposits to form on our outdoor furniture and, of course, on ceramic tiles. This is a common problem, but fortunately you can solve it quickly and effectively without damaging the tiles.
Why are ceramic tiles easy to maintain?
Ceramic tiles are extremely easy to maintain and require minimal effort to keep clean. However, use synthetic cleaning products with caution, as these can damage decorative paving. Other types of tiles have specific maintenance instructions, so always check which instructions apply to your tiles.
What is the best way to clean my patio with ceramic tiles?
- Water is your best friend: Warm water is sufficient for most stains and green deposits. Avoid acidic or aggressive cleaning agents.
- Remove cement residue: After laying the tiles, make sure that any residue from lime, cement or grout is thoroughly removed. Otherwise, it can stick and promote algae growth.
- Grease stains from the barbecue: Use warm soapy water and washing-up liquid to remove grease stains. Ceramic tiles can withstand a household sponge.
- Rust stains: Remove rust stains from pots, barbecues or chair legs immediately with warm water and a scouring pad. Prevent rust stains by removing rust-sensitive objects from the patio in winter.
- Removing green deposits: Use a rotating patio brush, which is often supplied with high-pressure cleaners. Anti-algae agents containing didecyldimethylammonium chloride also work very well.
Steps for cleaning ceramic tiles
Cleaning products
For ceramic tiles, warm water is usually sufficient for most stains and green deposits. Do not use acidic or aggressive products to remove green deposits. This is completely unnecessary and also bad for the environment.
Grease stains from the barbecue
- Cleaning agent: use warm soapy water and washing-up liquid.
- Method: clean grease stains immediately with a household sponge to prevent dirt from sticking to the grease.
Cleaning rust stains
- Cleaning method: warm water and a scouring pad.
- Method: Remove rust stains regularly and avoid prolonged exposure of metal objects to the tiles.
Removing green deposits
- Cleaning agent: Anti-algae agent containing didecyldimethylammonium chloride (e.g. Varistone GreenEx, Luxan Green Deposit Cleaner, etc.).
- Method: Mix the anti-algae agent with water and spray it onto the tiles using a pressure sprayer or watering can. Allow the sun and rain to do their work. For preventive measures, repeat this in the autumn.
Additional tips for cleaning ceramic tiles
- Use a pressure washer: A pressure washer with or without a rotating brush can be effective for removing green deposits without too much splashing.
- Regular maintenance: Regular maintenance will keep your patio looking beautiful and fresh without too much effort.
- Prevent scratches: Never slide the tiles over each other and keep them free of sand and sharp materials to prevent scratches.
With these tips and instructions, you can keep your ceramic tiles in top condition so you can enjoy your patio to the fullest!
