At the National Climate Expo in Houten today, a prestigious Sustainability Passport was awarded to the Brabant family business MBI De Steenmeesters for their climate-resistant paving.

Green Paving for a Future-Proof City

The awareness that "we need nature as much as nature needs us" is growing. Furthermore, weather conditions are pointing out the fact that we must design in harmony with nature for a future-proof city. Plans must not only focus on maximum functionality; this means we must provide space not just for greenery but also for all other elements of nature, such as water and sunlight. This is our shared challenge for the future, and "green" paving is more relevant than ever. MBI has a clear vision and sustainability policy in this regard.

ECI as a Transparent Benchmark

Concrete is an innovative material and still evolving in terms of climate-adaptive performance. With the new Duraton® formulation, MBI can demonstrate, based on data (the ECI value), that its products are a sustainable choice. The formulation considers, among other factors, the combination of raw materials to ensure that the stones remain circular.

There are various choices made in production that contribute to a lower CO2 footprint: green energy, bio-based materials, recycled and alternative raw materials, alternative binders, or combinations of these. But other components also play a role in determining environmental impact: lifespan, cost of ownership, long-term availability of raw materials, and circularity (including the environmental impact of making things circular). All these aspects, when added up and weighed, provide a clear indication of a product's sustainability. This transparent measurement method further encourages the industry to move towards sustainability.
