‘New Type of Decorative Paving with European Potential’

After extensive research, MBI succeeded in creating a bond between two materials that previously seemed impossible. This Dutch invention, GeoCeramica®, is "ceramics on concrete." This new type of decorative paving reduces the installation costs of ceramics by 50%, as a special supporting foundation is already applied during the production process. The growing demand for ceramic outdoor tiles prompted paving specialist MBI to apply its expertise in concrete and production techniques to develop this unique combination of a concrete tile with a ceramic top layer. Patents have been filed, and there has already been interest from Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany.

Decorative Paving Market

The range of products for the garden is vast and can be divided into three categories: concrete, ceramics, and natural stone. Each category possesses its own set of properties and characteristics, with distinct methods of processing and associated price points. Concrete holds the largest market share, partly due to its relatively simple processing method. Ceramics have been gaining ground on natural stone year after year due to their usage advantages. However, a major downside is that an intensive and expensive foundation must be laid. Additionally, it is not suitable for all types of soil in the Netherlands. A combination of concrete and ceramics offers the ideal solution.

Technical Challenge of Ceramic Tiles on Concrete Base

Combining two different materials presents a technical challenge. First, the materials must be sustainably bonded, and second, this bond must remain intact under various conditions such as moisture, frost, and heat. Previously, such a construction seemed impossible due to the differing properties of both materials. The shrinkage and expansion differences appeared insurmountable.

However, a new concrete formulation provides the solution. By mixing the concrete in its wet state and adding an activation liquid, a durable bond forms with the ceramic, resulting in a highly resilient connection. This innovative production process is called the Stabikorn® system.

The Best of Both Worlds

With the invention of GeoCeramica®, a completely new category of decorative paving has been introduced, offering numerous advantages. It combines the high-quality properties of ceramics with the relatively simple processing of concrete. After a controlled testing period, production has now been further scaled up. The collection, which will be fully available by the end of April, includes 23 different designs. Three of these designs will also be suitable for heavy-duty applications such as driveways.
