Garden wall: practical and decorative
Height differences create excitement in the garden
Function of garden walls
Small garden walls, raised borders and flower boxes add height and a playful effect to your garden. These easy-to-build elevations also provide a beautiful finish to your garden or terrace. A border can also add depth to your garden.
That is why it is one of the garden design tips from Mariette, landscape architect at Eigen Huis & Tuin. Garden walls are very versatile and, when used well, they also offer extra privacy. Depending on the type of stacking blocks you choose, a wall can be romantic, super modern or nostalgic.
Building a garden wall
A garden wall is easy to build. A good foundation is important to support the weight of the stacking blocks. You can make a foundation with (quick-setting) concrete that you pour into a trench and then stack the blocks on top of it. For a garden wall up to approx. 40 cm high, you can also use a flat edging strip as a foundation. The foundation ensures that the wall does not subside.
Bricklaying or gluing?
Bricklaying is a technique that requires skill. If you want to do it properly, you need a lot of materials and tools. Bricklaying is an aesthetic choice if a visible joint is important. For example, if you want your garden wall to connect to the existing shed or garage wall. In that case, you will probably work with small bricks (facing bricks). On this page, we assume the use of larger concrete stacking blocks.
Money-saving tip
It is trendy to plaster garden walls. In that case, it doesn't really matter which stacking blocks you choose. However, it is a shame to choose stacking blocks that have decorative value, because you will end up paying too much. Instead, choose inexpensive masonry blocks or ask your decorative paving specialist for B-grade material.

Stacking blocks
Almost every garden has a flower box, border or garden wall. For this, you need stacking blocks. You can choose from blocks with a smooth finish or an aged finish. Stacking blocks are easy to work with.
Corner block
Build a wall using a random bond pattern. This not only looks better, it is also stronger. However, it does mean you will have to do some sawing. Corner blocks are available for some series, which makes things a lot easier!
