Creating a garden design
Tips from Mariette van Leeuwen, landscape architect at Eigen Huis & Tuin
The importance of a good floor plan
When creating a garden design, a floor plan is essential. Make a scale drawing (1:20 or 1:50) showing the house, windows and doors. This information is crucial for determining terraces, walkways and sightlines. Don't forget to indicate the north and south sides to determine the perfect spot for a sun terrace and suitable plants.
Identify wishes and requirements
Involve all family members in the design and identify their wishes. Make a list of requirements (must-haves) and wishes (nice-to-haves) and create a collage of moods, colours and materials. Consider decorative paving, fencing and planting.
Calm and lines in the design
Straight lines bring calm to your garden design. To make your garden look bigger, you can work with depth lines. This principle also applies to the width of the garden.
Determine light points
Plan the light points in your garden design. Light walkways, ponds, BBQs and lawnmowers. MBI offers garden tiles with recesses for in-lite garden lighting. Discover GeoCeramica® In-Lite ready for a stylish lighting solution.
Tips for a living garden
Planting
Choose plants that suit the soil type (clay, peat or sand). Consider which plants you want: flowering plants need an average of six hours of sun per day.
Height differences
Add height differences to create interest in your garden. Combine taller elements such as trees or a pergola with lower elements. These provide shade, shelter and privacy.
Design your own patio
Garden tiles for exciting contrast
Use larger tiles to create a spacious effect in a smaller garden. Create contrast with a random pattern and combine different materials, colours and textures such as GeoSteen®, ceramics or clinkers.
Location of the patio
Consider placing the patio further away from the house. This improves the view from the house and creates a more attractive garden.

Consider pets and other animals
Think about the animals in your garden design. Add birdhouses, insect houses, feeding places and shelters. Ensure there is sufficient greenery and biodiversity, as this will bring extra life to your garden and benefit nature.
With these tips from Mariette van Leeuwen, you can create a beautiful and functional garden design that meets all the needs of your family and pets. Good luck!
