Driveway joints
Choose the right jointing compound for heavier loads
When jointing your driveway, it is important to choose the right jointing compound, depending on the width of the joint, the type of paving and the application. Special jointing compounds have been developed for driveways, where the load is often higher. Below you will find the most important characteristics and differences between the jointing compounds offered by MBI.
Types of jointing compounds
There are various types of jointing materials, including hard joints, semi-hard joints and loose jointing sand. Each type has unique properties and must be processed correctly. MBI offers a wide range of jointing materials, an overview of which can be found in our handy jointing advice. Specific jointing materials are required for applications with higher traffic loads, such as driveways.
AquaColor Joints 2Drive
AquaColor Joints 2Drive has been specially developed for our 6 cm GeoCeramica® tiles for driveways. This jointing compound is a hard joint based on epoxy resin and is suitable for joints of at least 3 mm. The larger grain is slightly water-permeable and adheres well to the side of the tile, resulting in a strong joint. AquaColor Joints 2Drive is resistant to frost and de-icing salt and is weed-free. Because it has low water permeability, it must be applied to a well-drained surface. The joint filler is applied wet and is self-compacting.
Features of AquaColor Joints 2Drive:
- Based on epoxy resin
- Water-permeable
- Wet application
- Suitable for joints >3 mm
- Weed-resistant
- Requires a water-permeable substrate
Gator EuroStone
Gator EuroStone has been developed for paving with a higher traffic load, such as driveways, and can be used with clinkers, cobblestones, courtstones and natural stone. This semi-hard grout is polymer-based and suitable for narrow joints from 2 mm. The smaller grain is water-repellent and adheres well to the side of the tile, ensuring a strong joint. It can be used on both water-permeable and water-impermeable substrates. Gator EuroStone is applied dry and is not self-compacting; after sweeping, the stone or tile must be vibrated with a vibrating plate that does not damage the surface. Sufficient water must be used for re-watering.
Features of Gator EuroStone:
- Polymer-based
- Water-repellent
- Can be applied dry
- Suitable for joints >2 mm <38 mm
- Weed-resistant
- Can be used on both water-permeable and water-repellent surfaces
Choosing the right jointing compound for your driveway is essential for durable and strong paving. AquaColor Joints 2Drive and Gator EuroStone are both excellent options for applications with heavier traffic loads, each with their own unique properties and advantages.
