Duraton® - Sustainable concrete!
We strive to produce bricks with the lowest ECI value that is possible with the state of the art, without compromising the basic requirements of lifespan and possibility of re-use. Concrete that has been produced in the most sustainable way; with raw materials that guarantee long-term sustainability; where products have a guaranteed long term of use with a high-quality top layer. That's Duraton®!
Duraton® stands for the MBI stone with the lowest ECI-value:
- Focus on the total environmental costs
- CO2 efficiency of binders
- Optimal performance and lifespan
- Result: 34% ECI reduction compared to a comparable stone in standard formulation
Sustainable concrete pavers
An important step to reduce the ECI value is to use less cement and to ensure that the cement that is added is also 100% activated. From that point of view, MBI has developed a new recipe, composed of a minimal amount of cement supplemented with environmentally friendly additives. This means that we use up to 30% less cement in our concrete paving stones. The additives in the recipe ensure that the adhesive strength of cement is increased and the pavers retain their strength.
Vision built on conscious decisions
Activators other than cement are possibly even more harmful to people and the environment. Other activators require a high percentage of pulverized coal (from coal-fired power stations). This raw material is becoming scarce and cannot meet demand in the medium to long term. MBI, on the other hand, uses a clean residual product and further develops the activator that, in combination with other clean fillers, maximizes it's binding abilities.
Environmental Cost Indicator (ECI)
Concrete is a very innovative material and is still being developed to further reduce environmental costs. With the new Duraton® recipe, we dare to say on the basis of figures (the ECI value) that our concrete paving stones are a sustainable choice, now and in the future. We also pay attention to the combination of raw materials in our recipe: after all, the stones must also remain circular.
There are various choices that contribute to lower CO2 during production: green energy, biobased materials, recycled and alternative raw materials, alternative binders or combinations of these. But there are also other components that are taken into account in determining the environmental impact: lifespan, cost of ownership, availability of raw materials in the long term and circularity (including the environmental impact of making it circular). All aspects added up and weighed together really say something about sustainability!
A uniform measuring method such as ECI is the only way to know where products are on the steps to the climate target. That is why MBI can provide the ECI values of a product at any time. In this way, we not only increase transparency towards the client, but we encourage ourselves to always strive for even more sustainability.
Collaboration for the best results
We work together for our outdoor living environment! Not only with our partners who sell and process the physical products. Especially working with the designers who provide direction and are at the basis of change. MBI embraces change, because it delivers sustainable and added value in product development. In recent years we have experienced that specific questions from the client and designer result in innovative and sustainable products. Collaborating at this level gives us many new insights and we can help you translate your wishes into concrete materials. Within our advisory team we have experts available who have specialized in a current theme.
