Almere Duin provides space for about 3,000 homes, commercial real estate opportunities and recreational facilities. The choice of paving in this environment was crucial to ensure both aesthetics and functionality. The MBI grass boulder plays a central role in this. This open paving has been specially designed to fit seamlessly into the natural dune environment. It not only offers a visually attractive solution but also effectively counteracts erosion. In addition, the grass boulder enables the infiltration of rainwater and the growth of (dune) grass, contributing to a sustainable and environmentally friendly ecosystem.

One of the technological innovations contributing to the sustainability of Almere Duin is the use of the Porodrain® system. This system ensures optimal infiltration of rainwater, which helps prevent flooding and promotes a healthy soil structure. The Porodrain® system is integrated into the grass-boulder paving, making the neighbourhood not only sustainable but also climate-proof.

Wadden stone: an ode to the dunes and the sea

Cooperation for a unique design

In collaboration with Zus Rotterdam bureau and the Municipality of Almere, MBI developed a special project stone: the Wadden stone. Inspired by the dunes and the sea, this unique stone contains shells and sand tones that pay homage to the natural environment. The wadden stone is used for footpaths, driveways and entrances, contributing to the cohesion and aesthetic whole of Almere Duin. 

Application of tidal stone

• Footpaths: Waddenstone creates safe and sustainable footpaths through the neighbourhood.
• Mole gutters: These are essential for water drainage and fit perfectly into the natural landscape.
• Driveways: The stone provides a stable and durable surface for driveways, while remaining visually appealing.
