In the Oud Duyn neighbourhood in Ermelo, 145,000 GeoSteen® cobblestones in the Lineair Lazise design have been laid. The choice of these cobblestones combines two requirements that are often difficult to reconcile in infrastructure projects: an appearance that suits the wooded surroundings and paving that allows rainwater to infiltrate immediately. Read on to find out how this combination was achieved in Oud Duyn.

Why did the contractor and the local council choose these cobblestones for Oud Duyn?

For Oud Duyn, the aim was to lay paving that evoked the look of classic cobblestones in a random pattern. This classic look blends perfectly with the neighbourhood’s wooded, green setting. W. Timmer & Zn carried out the installation, using our Lazise-coloured cobblestones laid in a random pattern as the base, finished with grass-reinforced concrete blocks at the kerb. This combination of form and finish defines the streetscape of the entire neighbourhood.

What makes the Linear Lazise design special?

In the case of our cobblestones, ‘Linear’ refers to the variation in size, creating a playful interplay of lines. The surface also contains natural aggregates, giving it a natural stone appearance. This, combined with the dimensional stability you would expect from a pressed concrete block, makes cobblestones a robust and distinctive choice for a wide range of projects.

How do cobblestones improve rainwater infiltration?

Cobblestones are a type of permeable paving. This means that the gaps between the cobblestones allow rainwater to infiltrate the ground more quickly, rather than being drained away via the sewer system. This reduces the burden on the sewer system and minimises the amount of water left on the streets after a downpour. Furthermore, direct infiltration helps maintain local groundwater levels, which can provide the green surroundings with water for a longer period during times of extreme heat and drought. For a neighbourhood such as Oud Duyn, with plenty of greenery and a wooded environment, this aligns with the desire to preserve the natural water balance.

What are the practical benefits of combining cobblestones with grass-reinforced concrete blocks?

By laying the cobblestones in a random pattern alongside grass-reinforced concrete blocks throughout the neighbourhood, a cohesive streetscape is created that blends in with the wooded surroundings. The paving is designed to withstand heavy use whilst remaining permeable. In this way, the choice of materials in Oud Duyn contributes to a design that can withstand both daily use and future rainfall.
