Unique paving stones for a distinctive beach atmosphere

In Almere, a unique residential and recreational area has been created where the natural dune landscape has been given a tangible presence within the built environment. Plan DUIN is more than just an urban development project; it is a design vision in which landscape, architecture and public space blend together naturally. One of the most eye-catching features is the central Duinplein, which, with its variations in height, colour gradients and textures, is reminiscent of a dune hollow, but created using paving stones. From the distinctive design by Buro ZUS to the meticulous execution by Van Kessel Sport en Cultuurtechniek, this has become a truly unique landscape.

Paving stones with shells: inspiration from nature

The special GeoArdesia Mare paving stones, with their unique appearance, were developed specifically for the construction of the square and the pathway structures within the project. A distinctive feature is the incorporation of shells into the top layer, giving the texture and colour gradient a natural, beach-like effect. The stones are produced in five shades, which gradually transition from light to dark. This subtle play of colours contributes to the intended dune-like feel within the urban landscape. The shells, sourced from shell banks in the North Sea, vary in colour depending on the calcium carbonate content in the water. To prevent colour variations within a single shade, the stones were produced in batches, with the mixing ratios carefully calibrated.

A stone dune hollow as a meeting place

Duinplein forms the beating heart of the neighbourhood and has been designed as a so-called ‘stone dune hollow’. Differences in height, colour gradients and patterns in the paving mimic the natural dynamics of a dune landscape. The paving evokes associations with ripples of sand on the beach and the colour gradient from dry to wet sand. The square is a meeting place where residents, visitors and leisure-seekers can come together.

The lines and colours flow seamlessly into the surrounding buildings, thereby reinforcing the cohesion of the area. The surrounding facilities are also embedded in the landscape, including green roofs on car parks.

Between city and nature

Plan DUIN demonstrates how an urban residential area can be interwoven with the feel of a coastal landscape. Whilst residents enjoy the peace and space of their surroundings, the area also offers views of Amsterdam on clear days. In this way, Plan DUIN forms a unique combination of urban accessibility and a sense of the landscape, a place where architecture and nature reinforce one another.
