In Middelburg, you’ll find Het Groene Woud, a university campus where innovation and aesthetics come together. The aim here was to create an inviting and sustainable outdoor space. And that aim has been achieved with the innovative, water-permeable NCB paving stone. This paving stone allows rainwater to infiltrate the soil and provides space for greenery. Here, a combination of the NCB Type 1 Open 40% and the NCB Type 2 Connect 17% was chosen. The result? A weather-resistant, green outdoor space that the entire campus can enjoy.
A clever balance between water and paving
The use of NCB stones makes the site resistant to extreme rainfall and heat stress. By cleverly combining the two variants, the space can be optimally designed for various uses. The open structure of the pavers allows rainwater to infiltrate directly into the ground. This minimises water runoff via the sewer system, significantly reducing the risk of flooding. By using the NCB Type 1 Open 40% on the square, this part of the space becomes green and inviting. For areas with heavier traffic, such as the (cycle) paths, the Type 2 Connect 17% has been used. The clever design of the stones ensures stability, making them ideal for intensive use. The NCB stones are designed to be functional without compromising on user comfort.
A green character
This project clearly demonstrates how NCB stones provide space for grass and low-growing plants. The vibrancy this creates is the first thing that catches the eye at Het Groene Woud. The open spaces within the stones allow roots to grow. Combined with natural water infiltration, this creates the perfect environment for grass and low-growing plants. The concrete structure makes the stones sturdy enough for intensive daily use and creates a user-friendly campus. The NCB stone contributes to a pleasant living environment for both people and plants.
An eye for aesthetics and sustainability
The NCB stone combines aesthetics with sustainability. This ties in well with Middelburg’s sustainability goals and the campus’s modern architecture. By combining the open variant with the more compact version, you create a balance between the sleek, grey concrete and the vibrant greenery. The contrast created between the anthracite-coloured paving stone and the greenery results in a contemporary, welcoming streetscape. This transforms the campus into a functional outdoor space that invites people to linger and socialise. The interplay of lines created by the use of the paving stones fosters a calm, natural atmosphere. Het Groene Woud is an excellent example of how climate-adaptive paving and aesthetic design reinforce one another.
