MBI De Steenmeesters celebrated an extraordinary milestone on November 22 with the unveiling of its new production hall, the 'Modern Mondriaan'.

From Sand Pile to Sustainable Production Facility

KAMPEN – After eight months of intense efforts, the former sand pile has been transformed into an impressive production facility, proudly bearing the name of the Dutch master Mondriaan. Located at the Haatlandhaven in Kampen, the brand-new facility is a tribute to MBI's 80 years of experience and expertise. In addition to utilizing the most modern techniques, this factory ranks among the most sustainable concrete factories in Europe.

For the first time, the doors were opened to the public. A select group of MBI customers were the first to witness the innovative production processes taking place in the new factory. Production and Technology Director, Ton Pasnagel, expressed his pride during the celebratory event about the incredibly fast realization of this state-of-the-art factory: “In 8 months, we went from the first pile to an operational factory.”

Sustainable Future

One of the most striking features of the new production facility is the focus on sustainability and environmental friendliness. In addition to using the most modern techniques, this factory is one of the most sustainable concrete factories in Europe. "The factory is highly energy-efficient and completely gas-free. It also significantly reduces CO2 emissions, making the products produced even more sustainable," said Pasnagel. The Modern Mondriaan integrates advanced technologies to guarantee energy efficiency and implements clean production processes. For example, the climate-controlled rooms preserve the products 24 hours a day under perfect conditions without using gas. This innovative approach, where released heat is utilized, results in a remarkably energy-efficient process, with significantly lower cement consumption and reduced energy requirements. The use of purified water from the IJssel, full LED lighting in the hall, and electrically powered conveyors all contribute to a sustainable production environment. The holistic use of electrical systems, even for dust extraction (which is also reused in the lower concrete layer), creates a hybrid system that not only saves energy but also generates it, positioning MBI De Steenmeesters as a leader in eco-friendly concrete production.

Unique Products

The modern facilities provide space to develop natural nuances and large formats, further strengthening MBI's position in the decorative paving market. Commercial Director Patrick van den Tillaart says: "With our innovative products, produced through advanced technology, MBI contributes daily to beautifying the world. The Inuancia technology, developed by MBI, allows us to process our products in any desired direction without compromising the beautiful, nuanced pattern. This enables us to create tiles that are not only tighter and stronger but also further confirm MBI's position as a leading brand in paving."

Corporate Social Responsibility

MBI is a leading player in decorative paving in the Netherlands. Its commitment to sustainability is evident in all activities, where raw materials are used efficiently and environmentally friendly alternatives are explored. For example, sea sand is used instead of land sand, making it an inexhaustible and eco-friendly source. Sustainable alternatives for gravel and cement are applied, and the company recycles its own construction waste. Green electricity is supplied by two wind turbines on the premises and thousands of solar panels. Thanks to electric forklifts on the yard, 100,000 liters of diesel are saved annually. Furthermore, emissions are reduced, and traffic pressure is decreased by delivering raw materials by ship. Marcel Bettonvil, CEO: "The beauty of a family business like MBI is that we can invest counter-cyclically. Even in a downturn, we ensure timely innovation, allowing MBI to look to the future with confidence, with the most modern and unique products of this time."

Partners

The success of this project is also thanks to the MBI project team and dedicated suppliers and partners, including Kalkman BV, who contributed to achieving this milestone.
