Wkb Checklist for Brickwork

A tool for quality and assurance

Cracks, instability and aesthetic flaws such as efflorescence, soiling or incorrect brickwork bonds are common problems in brickwork. These are often caused by time pressure, complex construction processes and insufficient knowledge of applicable standards and guidelines. The Construction Quality Assurance Act (Wkb) imposes strict requirements on the quality control of construction projects. This means that contractors and bricklaying firms must deliver high-quality work and properly document brickwork projects. To support them in this, MBI De Steenmeesters, in collaboration with the MADE knowledge centre and leading companies, has developed the Wkb Brickwork Checklist.

Why a checklist for brickwork?

In the brickwork sector, various parties are often involved in the execution of a project, such as contractors, bricklaying firms and suppliers. This collaboration can lead to a lack of clarity regarding responsibilities and standards, particularly when there is little knowledge of the applicable guidelines. Combined with insufficient checks, this results in quality issues and the need for remedial work.

Time pressure also plays a major role in the emergence of quality issues. Projects are often driven by tight schedules, meaning that checks are sometimes skipped or given insufficient attention. The Wkb Brickwork Checklist helps construction professionals tackle these challenges. It is a structured and practical tool that helps contractors and bricklayers determine in advance which standards and guidelines apply. Furthermore, the checklist supports quality control during the preparation and execution phases. Recording performance declarations, product information and installation instructions in a timely manner provides a solid basis for quality assurance, which saves time and costs and increases client confidence.

How does the Wkb Brickwork Checklist work?

The checklist guides contractors and bricklaying firms through the process in three steps to ensure the quality of the brickwork and compliance with the Wkb:

  1. Identifying the requirements | Ensure that all standards, guidelines and recommendations applicable to the project are clear. For example, NEN-EN and BRL regulations.
  2. Preparation phase | Check that all necessary documents, such as declarations of performance, advice and installation instructions, are available and correct. This makes it easier to get off to a good start.
  3. Execution phase | Focus on proper execution and ensure that everything is carried out in accordance with the established requirements and advice. This prevents errors and unnecessary rectification work.

This checklist turns quality assurance into a well-structured process that helps contractors and bricklayers to work systematically and efficiently. By following a clear process from the outset, it is possible to prevent problems at an early stage.
