Stone strips for outdoor use

Processing advice for stone strips

Stone strips are being used more and more often, both in renovations and in new construction projects. Stone strips are applied directly to the façade or insulation boards. In renovation projects, a new coat of strips can be applied to the existing façade to give it a completely new look, but you can also choose to add extra insulation to the outside of the house on which the strips are applied. In new construction projects, stone strips can be chosen for lighter construction techniques, prefab options or design possibilities. MBI stone strips can be processed in various ways with different systems and/or types of insulation boards.

  • Against the existing architectural structure;
  • On a fibre cement board;
  • On an insulation board.

1. Existing architectural structure

Provided that the existing (stone) structure is stable and sufficiently strong, stone strips can be applied to it. For the strips to adhere properly, it is important to consult with an adhesive manufacturer. Take into account the placement of expansion joints in the new façade to be constructed with MBI stone strips.

2. On fibre cement board

In some cases, it may be easier to install a framework onto which fibre cement board is screwed. This can offer advantages when covering uneven or unstable surfaces, for ceiling applications or for concealing pipework. MBI, in collaboration with Omnicol, has conducted a test on adhesion to a Fermacell H2O panel.

3. On an insulation board

In this case, we prefer to talk about a system that should be viewed as a whole. Such a system consists of, among other things, the insulation layer which is glued to the existing substrate, followed by a mortar fabric layer with extra reinforcements at corners and facade openings, and finally the glued finish with our MBI strips. For these systems, we refer you to market parties who have knowledge and experience in insulating and cladding with our concrete strips. Market parties with extensive experience in this field are Willco from Aalst (B) and Strikolith / Weber.

Prevent cracking

Expansion joints are also necessary for stone strips

If the length is too great, there is a risk that the moving wall section will cause cracking that is even visible in the strips. Therefore, an expansion plan, in which a joint is applied in the right places, is also a requirement for stone strips in order to prevent excessively large wall sections. Expansion joints are important to accommodate the physical properties such as shrinkage and expansion of the strips, but also of the load-bearing materials.
It is also important to carefully examine the structure of the underlying construction and to incorporate any decouplings in the strip finish.

For all strips, it is very important that the concrete strips adhere well to the substrate. Consult the adhesive manufacturer for this.
