Green car parks
Making car parks climate-adaptive
We are increasingly facing heavy rainfall. This requires efficient water drainage. For municipalities, climate adaptation means ensuring that rainwater does not cause water damage and that residents experience as little flooding as possible. In areas where soil permeability is relatively high, open paving is part of the solution. As car parks often cover large areas, green car parks are an excellent contribution to the climate-adaptive design of public spaces. In addition, biodiversity is better preserved in urban areas and greenery provides a pleasant experience of outdoor space.
Design and function in one
Paving and nature together determine the look, atmosphere and liveability of our outdoor space. MBI's ‘New City Design’ concept was born from this idea, combining functionality and aesthetics. Green parking spaces are often associated with grass concrete tiles. These come in various designs, with flat grass concrete tiles being the most suitable for parking spaces. The flat surface texture ensures optimum driving comfort and better walkability. Besides grass concrete tiles, there are also ‘new generation’ tiles that create an exciting streetscape.
New generation of bricks
- NCB Clinker is an extra-deep stone with 42% open space to promote grass growth and water infiltration. Open paving in clinker bond.
- Herba Linea is a stylish paving solution with 22% open space in a ‘strip pattern’, perfect for urban areas.
- Capital L+T bricks can be endlessly varied from dense paving to very open paving. The unique L and T shapes offer great freedom of choice in laying patterns.
Laying green parking spaces
For the foundation under green parking spaces, it is important that the subsoil is suitable. It must be permeable to promote water infiltration. In addition, the subsoil, in combination with the paving, must have a high load-bearing capacity to prevent subsidence caused by driving traffic. Depending on the stone, the paving can be processed manually or by machine. They are then filled with soil or coarse gravel. We recommend filling the gaps with topsoil and then sweeping the gullies empty again. In this way, the paving retains its water-permeable character and grass growth is promoted. After laying, the paved surface is immediately passable for walking and driving traffic.
