Find the best tile for your garden paving
Patio tiles
If you are looking for the ideal patio tiles, you will soon find a huge variety of different types and colours. In addition to decorative concrete paving, ceramic garden tiles are extremely popular. But which tiles are the best choice for your situation? On this page, we have set out a number of criteria that you can use to choose a type of patio tile. This brief explanation with a checklist of criteria will help you during the orientation phase and in making the right choice.
On this page you will find information about:
- Maintenance
- Scratch and stain resistance
- Budget
- Size
- Processing
- Designs
Low-maintenance patio
One of the biggest wishes we often hear is for a low-maintenance garden. That makes sense; you probably don't want to be constantly cleaning your patio tiles. MBI offers various types of concrete tiles with a protective coating, which prevents dirt and deposits from sticking to the pores. However, the most low-maintenance type of paving is ceramic or our ceramic-on-concrete tile GeoCeramica®. Ceramic tiles are fired, which creates a very dense and hard surface. This makes it more difficult for dirt and deposits to adhere. What's more, ceramic is easy to clean with warm water or a high-pressure sprayer. However, when using a high-pressure sprayer, be careful with the joints!
Scratch and stain resistant patio tiles
Is your garden a heavily used space? Then it is wise to consider the stain and scratch resistance of the tiles. In this case, ceramic patio tiles are the best option. Thanks to their super-hard surface, ceramic tiles are highly scratch and stain resistant! They are also highly resistant to chlorine, making them ideal for use around swimming pools and ponds.
Budget paving
A limited budget does not necessarily mean that you cannot purchase high-quality patio tiles. MBI has a beautiful collection consisting of no fewer than eight lines for smaller budgets. BasicSteen is a budget-friendly series of concrete tiles and stones. Your choice is not limited; a great deal of attention has been paid to creating a wide range of beautiful colour nuances. And the entire BasicSteen collection is finished with a protective coating with a factor of 25 or 30. Concrete tiles are also relatively easy to lay, which will also save on installation costs!
Formats
The choice of formats can vary. In addition to the popular 60×60 terrace tiles, there are also large formats of 80x80cm and even 100x100cm. These large formats are perfect for an impressive garden that exudes luxury. Small formats, on the other hand, are perfect for creating walkways, but also for framing the patio in combination with large patio tiles. We offer small formats in our BasicSteen and GeoSteen® collections. If you are looking for classic clinker bricks, MBI is also the right place for you. We have a large collection of nostalgic bricks, as well as tumbled cobblestones and cobblestones.
With small sizes, keep in mind that you will have many more joints. And joints mean places where weeds can grow. Fortunately, there are solutions for this too, with jointing compound. If in doubt, ask your landscaper or our dealer for advice.
Easy installation
It is best to leave the installation of patio tiles to a professional. There is, of course, a difference between installing different types of paving. In general, installing concrete tiles is quicker and easier than installing 2 cm ceramic tiles. However, GeoCeramica® is an exception to this. Thanks to its concrete base, GeoCeramica® is just as easy to lay as a concrete tile. In most cases, no special substrate construction is required and it is suitable for all types of substrates. 3 cm ceramic tiles are also easier to work with than 2 cm ceramic tiles.

Designs
Last but not least! The number of designs and how they are realised is very important for the look and feel of your garden and/or project. If you are going for a concrete look, then you can of course opt for concrete tiles. But are you looking for a natural stone or wood-look tile? Then it is best to choose one of the 150+ designs in our GeoCeramica® collection. Modern printing methods for ceramics offer a wide variety of designs and are almost indistinguishable from real natural stone or wood.
Checklist for your ideal patio tiles
Below you will find a handy overview of all the characteristics of the different types of patio tiles.
Continuity.
Choose reliable patio tile suppliers for consistently good quality and service.
It is wise to choose a reputable brand with a view to service. With such a supplier, you can also expect some continuity in terms of availability. Some types of patio tiles, such as ceramic, are produced in (small) production series. In concrete terms, this means that when laying a small patio, or in the event of damage, it is sometimes no longer possible to reorder tiles in exactly the same colour. In addition, there are now many patio tile outlets that sell tiles at so-called dumping prices. This often means that suppliers can suddenly disappear again, leaving you without any further service. If you choose a recognisable top brand manufactured in The Netherlands, you will always have an easily accessible point of contact.
