Climate-proof garden
A climate-proof garden with ACO
The right soil for water infiltration
Good soil is essential for a climate-proof garden! In the Netherlands, there are various types of soil: higher sandy soils, low moorland areas, sea clay areas, dune areas, etc. The type of soil in your area has a major impact on the workability of your garden, but also on water infiltration. In an ideal scenario, you will have sandy soil (sand fraction M50 > 200), as this has high water permeability, allowing water to infiltrate the soil well. However, if this is not the case, additional measures must be taken to properly collect water in the garden. This can be done by improving the subsoil, but even then, the right drainage and infiltration system is essential.
Keeping water in the garden
Not all soil types are suitable for water buffering. In sea clay areas, for example, water absorption by the soil is minimal. This means that rainwater has to go somewhere else. Collecting water in your own garden can relieve our overloaded sewer system. In some regions, this is even mandatory. ACO offers a total solution for this, whereby rainwater is drained, stored and ultimately returned to the soil, flora and fauna. This keeps your feet dry during rainy periods and keeps plants and trees well hydrated during drier periods.
Water drainage
Aesthetic drainage channels
Starting with rainwater drainage. Decorative paving does not necessarily cause waterlogging in your garden. A sloping terrace guides the water to the borders, where it is drained away via drainage channels. Draining water prevents puddles from forming and dirt from accumulating on your patio. You can choose from a variety of grated gutters and minimalist slotted gutters. Some are practical for maintenance, while others are very minimalist and aesthetic. There is a suitable ACO drainage gutter for every garden.

ACO RainBloxx infiltration system
Once the water has been collected, there are two options. The water can be drained into the sewer or stored in the garden. The latter is preferable, and there is a smart system for this: Rainbloxx. These are durable and lightweight blocks of rock wool that absorb the water and gradually release it to the soil or plants during drier periods. Rainbloxx comes in three variants with different applications. Find an authorised dealer near you here.
ACO RainBloxx 60
ACO Rainbloxx 60 is installed under a larger surface such as a terrace to collect water that flows away through water-permeable joints and borders. To install the elements, dig a relatively shallow hole where the terrace will be located. Then place the Rainbloxx with drainage pipes in between, which can later be connected to the gutter. Next, add the sand substrate and then the paving and drainage gutters on top. One element measuring 120x50x6 cm has a storage capacity of 36 litres.
ACO RainBloxx 200
ACO Rainbloxx 200 is placed directly under a linear drain. You make holes in the ACO drainage channel so that the water can be absorbed by the Rainbloxx. One element can absorb 36 litres of water.
ACO RainBloxx 600
The ACO Rainbloxx 600 can also be connected to a downpipe, allowing rainwater from the roof to be collected directly via the downpipe. This Rainbloxx has a storage capacity of 120 litres and can be placed next to trees or under large planters, for example.
