Autumn: the forgotten gardening season
October is the month of the forgotten gardening season
Autumn is often the forgotten gardening season, and that's unfair! What many people don't know is that autumn is actually an excellent time to get started in the garden. Thirty years ago, this was still common practice, but in recent years, all interest in gardening has shifted to spring. That's why various organisations are paying extra attention to the forgotten gardening season during the month of October.
October autumn campaign
Stichting Steenbreek, NL Greenlabel, Stichting De Groene Stad, De Tuinen van Appeltern and Tuinbranche Nederland are running various (online) campaigns throughout October to revive the forgotten gardening season. Their mission is clear: to motivate people to get started in the garden in autumn. They are using various channels to do this, and you will also find a lot about #forgottengardenseason on social media this month. Be inspired and get started in your own garden! In this article, we also give some tips on how to enjoy your garden in autumn.
Planting in autumn
A common concern when gardening in autumn is the weather. People often think that autumn is not suitable for planting, but the opposite is true. The soil is still warm after the summer, which ensures better plant growth. Trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs are in “hibernation” in autumn and are therefore easier to plant or transplant. The roots also have more time to develop, allowing them to absorb nutrients and water more effectively. If you garden in autumn, you can enjoy your garden right away in spring! A vibrant garden in spring is also good for biodiversity.
Trees in autumn
A tree is a real eye-catcher in the garden. In summer, a tree provides shade, while the autumn colours create a different atmosphere in the autumn. There is plenty of choice from strong tree species that thrive in harsh weather conditions:
- Eucommia ulmoides (suitable for wet and dry soil)
- Quercus rhysophylla “Maya” (suitable for all soil types)
- Platanus orientalis “Minaret” (suitable for all soil types)
Enjoying your patio in autumn
Besides gardening, there are other ways to enjoy your garden in autumn. Now that the days are getting rainier and shorter, a canopy is a must. Atmospheric garden lighting also allows you to enjoy your garden in the evening and during the dark days. For example, create an illuminated walkway with GeoCeramica® In-Lite tiles.
A fire pit or outdoor fireplace is wonderful to enjoy. Or consider a “fire pit” for extra atmosphere. If you have maintained your patio in the summer, you will have little to do in the autumn. Do watch out for falling leaves, as these can leave brown stains that are difficult to remove. Therefore, remove leaves as soon as possible.
