“Bonded smallness”
7 School buildings for Porteum in Lelystad
Secondary school Porteum in Lelystad opened its doors in August 2021. Until August, there were three schools, which merged into Porteum so that a total offering can be offered in one location. The campus consists of 7 school buildings that house different programs and activities: havo, vwo, Technasium, bilingual education, tl, vmbo (with six vocational profiles) and a culture building. The school currently houses about 3,500 students.
Connected small scale
Porteum's seven school buildings are all connected by a walkway with a courtyard and schoolyard. “Porteum is unique in the Netherlands; its size makes it possible to share a lot of expertise, for example of pedagogues. Yet each program has its own school building within the campus. I call that connected smallness,” Rhody said.
Rhody Matthijs, head of communications & marketing at Porteum Lelystad , guided the process from concept to completion in the communication between all stakeholders and the municipality. Rhody is also involved as an interim communications consultant in positioning and change projects in secondary education, at various schools and platforms.
Modern and sustainable campus
The new campus had to do justice to the concept of small scale: together and yet each with their own space. The desire was further for a sustainable and beautiful campus, with plenty of space and light and good climate resistance. The campus is divided into different sections with their own schoolyard and bicycle sheds under the buildings. Space has been created under the buildings to separate traffic. MBI paving in the school's theme colors was chosen for the entire outdoor area around the school. GeoColor bricks were chosen for their durability, traffic resistance and aesthetics. “The campus has become a landmark for the city.”
Future plans
Now that the school has been in operation for a while, additional plans have been made to make the school even healthier and more athletic. Rhody: “We are moving with the situation. Adaptability is paramount at Porteum. This means literally having to grow, which is appropriate for a learning environment.
