Stainless steel grating from MBI

Ventilated facade

A simple good and modern product. Joint grates are used instead of open butt joints, for ventilation of the facade and repelling pests. Standard in our range available is the stainless steel joint grid in 4, 5 and 9 cm high. Suitable for the Geostylistix 595/295, waalformaat and Rox.

Guidelines cavity ventilation

Ventilation requirement per m2 of wall surface area

Cavity ventilation is defined in NEN 1068/NPR 2068 in three categories; non-ventilated, weakly ventilated and strongly ventilated. If all butt joints are fully open then there is a strongly ventilated cavity. However, GeoStylistix and Rox bricks are very dimensionally stable and are regularly laid cold against each other, so there is little to no ventilation. In that case, joint grates offer a nice solution.

According to NEN1068 / NPR2068, there is a requirement for minimum and maximum ventilation per m² of facade area. For a non-ventilated facade, this should be less than 500mm² per m² of facade. Here, open butt joints should be provided exclusively at the foundation and above window frames. One butt joint ventilation grid with size 40x8mm provides 320mm² ventilation opening, so these may also be used in a non-ventilated facade. However, the total m² per façade must be considered in order not to exceed this value. See the table below (source: Adviesbureau Vekemans, vekemans.nl, 2018).

Ventilation openings recommendation.

Provide ventilation openings just above ground level, below and above façade openings and below the connection at the roof. The number of butt joint vents depends on the degree of ventilation of the facade, but ventilation is always required! Our stainless steel butt joint vents not only provide ventilation of the cavity, but also guarantee proper drainage of moisture from the cavity. Depending on whether you choose a non-, weakly or highly ventilated facade, more or fewer butt joint vents will need to be installed.

Protection against vermin

Another important point from the Building Code is that there should be no openings >10mm in the facade to protect the cavity from rats and mice. In addition to this legal regulation, insects are also considered in practice. These can easily gain access to the cavity with a >10mm opening. Our joint diffusers are great for keeping out both mice and insects, while providing needed ventilation.
