Dilatation with 'standing tooth' as an alternative to structural expansion joints
Need for dilatation
Thermal stresses occur due to temperature variations in the climate. When the structure, including a cavity wall with masonry, heats up, expansion occurs, and when it cools, the structure shrinks. Moisture, shrinkage and deflection of the (main) structure affect the masonry of the exterior wall. This means that for large wall surfaces, measures must be taken to prevent unwanted cracking. The application of dilatations is an example of this. For this, you can request a dilation recommendation. However, architects often do not agree with the dilatation recommendation. The designed facade appearance can be rudely disrupted as a result. The “standing tooth” can serve as an alternative in this case.
Advantage of dilatation with concrete blocks
When dilating facades made of concrete brick, most dilatations may be performed cold. With this fact, the unique possibility arises to perform especially the building-physical dilatations with a release liner.
Standing tooth dilatation
This invisible dilatation then “zigzags” from bottom to top at the location where a visible cold dilatation would otherwise have been required. When executed in butt joint-free masonry, the application of the film may be limited to the ribbon joint, when executed with butt joint, preferably without interruption. This method is particularly suitable for facades made of adhesive, thin mortar or permeable mortar.
Advantages of this dilatation technique
- Saving on masonry profiles.
- Saving on sawing.
- Virtually invisible.
- A calmer facade appearance, especially on large surfaces.
This method of dilatation is already being used successfully in practice.
Corner solutions
People also often ask about corner solutions when it comes to dilation. Again, ask for dilation advice.
There are various options for corner dilatation. Check out some examples here.
