The choice of facing brick often takes centre stage, but the joint colour plays just as big a part in determining the final character of your façade. In this article, we outline three commonly used styles and explain what to look out for when combining grout and facing bricks.
Why does the joint determine the character of your façade?
A joint does more than simply fill the space between the bricks. Together with the facing brick, the colour of the joint determines whether a façade appears calm or, conversely, displays a distinctive pattern. With a long-format brick, such as GeoStylistix, the joint line stands out even more because the interplay of lines is already a key part of the design. With a smaller format, such as the Waal format, the joint plays a less dominant role, simply because proportionally more joint is visible per square metre of façade.
Which joint colour suits your facing bricks?
There’s a huge choice, which is precisely why it’s important to know in advance what look you’re going for. We’ve listed three styles for you.
- Tone-on-tone: do you want your façade to exude a sense of calm and look like a unified whole? Then choose a joint colour that’s close to the colour of the facing brick. The smaller the difference, the more uniform the façade will look.
- Contrast: do you want to emphasise the size and texture of the facing bricks? Then combine a light-coloured joint with a dark brick, or vice versa. This will highlight the pattern and lines in the façade.
- Minimalist: for a modern, sleek look, combine a light-coloured facing brick with a light-coloured joint. The difference between the brick and the joint fades, giving the façade a calm and uniform appearance.
